A mountain hot spring town where steaming waters, old-town streets, and local food make the perfect escape from Tokyo.

High in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, a few hours north of Tokyo, Kusatsu is one of Japan’s most beloved hot spring towns. While the famous waters are the main draw, there’s far more to discover here than just bathing.

At the heart of town lies the Yubatake (“hot water field”), where steaming spring water cascades through wooden channels — the symbol of Kusatsu and a mesmerizing sight, especially when lit up at night. Around it, narrow streets are lined with traditional ryokan, souvenir shops, and steaming public footbaths where you can soak your feet for free.

Don’t miss the yumomi performance, a traditional water-cooling ritual set to folk songs, or a stroll to the open-air Sainokawara baths.
